1955 was a bumper year for Ruby Murray; not only had she
5 singles nestling in the UK charts including the Number
one spot, she was in demand the length and breadth of
the British Isles, topping the bill at the London Palladium
and enjoying the honour of being selected for the Royal
Command Performance. In an era largely dominated by identikit
blonde bombshells, the shy redhead from Belfast with a
naturally husky voice had a refreshingly different look
and sound which made her stand out from the crowd. Thanks
to the growing popularity of television, by the age of
twenty-one Ruby was well on her way to becoming the nation's
first home grown Pop star. Best remembered for her signature
song Softly, Softly and sorely missed by her fans
to this day; Ruby remains one of Britain's best-loved
female artists.
Having recorded successfully for Columbia during the 50s
Ruby, like many of her contemporaries, found the onslaught
of Rock'n'Roll meant that gentle ballads with lush arrangements
were no longer in vogue. 1970 marked a change of label
and a return to the recording studio. Resisting the temptation
to recreate her earlier hits note for note, Change
Your Mind sees Ruby revisit Softly, Softly
and Heartbeat but also embrace contemporary
material like Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head
and the Country-tinged Away From You. Also
included are the two singles she recorded for President
It's Love That Counts and the stunning I
Will Wait For You, written by Michel Legrand for
1964's Les Parapluies De Cherbourg. These were the last
studio recordings Ruby made and are recollected here on
CD for the first time.
Re-mastered from the original analogue tapes and with
annotation by In Tune International's Gerry
Stonestreet, this long-awaited release is a must for
all Ruby Murray devotees.
