The
post-war years leading up to the arrival of Rock'n'Roll
provided jukeboxes and airwaves alike with a rich and varied
menu. The US, with its distinctive regional identities,
was fertile ground for that diversity be it jazz-tinged
R&B from Northern cities like Chicago, Texas Western
Swing, Hillbilly straight from the backwoods of Arkansas
or the soul-drenched Blues of the rural South. The fusion
of predominantly black R&B and white C&W would later
give rise to a unique new sound - Rock'n'Roll.
That it was able to fuse at all is remarkable, and this
CD explores the ground-breaking recordings and artists which
led up to its birth. Reading like a role call of honour
- Hank Williams, Chuck Willis, Ray Charles, Joe Turner,
Ruth Brown, Bob Wills, Wynonie Harris, Louis Jordan, Moon
Mullican, Bill Haley - every one played their part in changing
the face of popular music and, with the boundaries blurred,
never again would it be so easy to pigeon-hole.
Of special interest to collectors will be the original recording
of Rock Around The Clock, the song most often credited as
having put Rock'n'Roll well and truly on the map, and celebrating
its 50th Anniversary in 2004.
